Department of Pharmacognosy

Harnessing the Power of Nature for Modern Medicine

Introduction Of Department of Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy continues to flourish as a dynamic branch of modern science, encompassing phytomedicine, nutraceuticals, herbal cosmetics, and plant biotechnology. With the global reliance on plants for the treatment of diseases across various traditional medical systems, Pharmacognosy plays a pivotal role in pharmaceutical sciences through the discovery, identification, and evaluation of bioactive compounds from natural sources. The department is actively engaged in the protection of endangered medicinal species and the isolation of therapeutically valuable compounds from traditional remedies. It offers in-depth theoretical and practical training in areas like herbarium preparation, pharmacognosy of herbal drugs, extraction, isolation of secondary metabolites, formulation, and standardization of herbal products. Graduate-level students are trained in drug discovery from herbal sources, structural elucidation, molecular docking studies, and bioactive screening of phytochemicals. The department also emphasizes quality assurance and the safety evaluation of traditional medicine. Facilities include instruments such as HPTLC and essential tools for extraction and analysis.

Our Vision

To explore the potential of natural resources as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals.

Our Mission

To establish a unique platform for developing modern dosage forms by utilizing constituents from natural sources through innovative teaching, research, and training.

To enrich students by providing knowledge of modern techniques for isolation, screening, and utilization of phytochemicals.

To update the skills of students in identifying and characterizing the constituents of natural resources.

To encourage students to discover different active moieties from natural sources.

To highlight the importance of drugs from natural origin in the treatment of diseases.

Lab Facilities

The Department of Pharmacognosy is equipped with advanced infrastructure to support both practical classes and research activities. The department features essential instruments such as the BOD Incubator, Rotary Evaporator, Binocular Microscope, Centrifuge, and the advanced HPTLC (Camag) system. It houses a dedicated Undergraduate Lab and a Postgraduate Laboratory for hands-on training and research. The department also boasts key facilities including a CPCSEA Registered Animal House, Institutional Animal Ethics Committee Approval, advanced tools for CNS, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory studies, digital, non-invasive instrumentation, and setups for in-vivo, in-vitro, and toxicological research. Additional highlights include a well-organized Museum displaying crude drug specimens and educational charts, and a vibrant Medicinal Plant Garden that serves as a valuable resource for botanical studies and environmental awareness.

Instrumentation List

The department is well-equipped with advanced instruments to support both teaching and research. Major equipment includes the HPTLC (Camag), BOD Incubator, Rotary Evaporator, Hot Air Oven, Muffle Furnace, Digital Weighing Balance, Binocular Microscope, Projection Microscope, and Autoclave, all of which facilitate efficient extraction, isolation, and standardization of herbal drugs.
